Post-Apocalyptic Probate – Fine Art Print by D.A. Merrick

Digital painting printed with archival inks on select archival fine art papers.

Post-Apocalyptic Probate is the second in D.A. Merrick's Devil Series, a series exploring the nature and consequences of evil in what the artist describes as the "comical surrealist style." The work depicts the devil, horns castrated, mop in hand, cleaning up "black holes"–a visual pun meant to invoke an image of a certain kind of apocalypse. His teeth are decaying and his smile indicates fear, perhaps regret. Perhaps he's telling himself he's ok with this when he's really not, and the smile is more of a grimace. His eyes are empty, and, inexplicably, he's wearing a monicle. Maybe he's losing his mind, too, without someone to abuse.

The artist's statement: "This piece is my punishment of the devil, and of evil through his avatar. It's my way of saying to the reprobate, "I'm not going to rub your nose in it, because if you win, you'll do it yourself." I've had run-ins with evil, the devil, the bad, the ugly–whatever you want to call it– throughout my life. I think we all do, even when we are the devil. It all leads to isolation and desolation. And even though I know that someone who is, in their nature, truly evil, will never feel lasting remorse without some kind of intervention; it's because of what evil leads to that I also know that they can never fulfill their nature, lest they find themselves the Post-Apocalyptic Probate, cleaning up their mess in sufferance."

Merrick on the comical surrealist style: "The comical surrealist style exists in a juxtaposition of the comedy in all things, and the serious, dreamlike surrealist style. It's what would happen if in every Magritte painting, there was a banana being slipped on. It's a challenge to nature, a challenge to its belittlement and harsh abuses... I often find I am laughing at reality, without being in on the joke. It's more of a rebellious coping mechanism than anything else. 'I will laugh to make you trivial. I will laugh so that you cannot become something deadly serious in me.' The comical surrealist style reflects that."

Framing Note:

A white border is included around the artwork in each print. This border varies in width depending on the print size, but is always present to help preserve the composition during trimming and to assist with matting and framing. The image that is being printed from is sized to have a 1" border at the maximum size. That border shrinks as the print size shrinks. In addition, a small portion of this border is lost during trimming. Total listed dimensions include this border.
