Without and Wanting – Fine Art Print by D.A. Merrick

Digital painting printed with archival inks on select archival surfaces

Without and Wanting depicts a figure bearing an expression of quiet astonishment, but the work suggests something more profound is happening to the figure. In contrast to the subtlety of the expression, the hair is wild to reflect a hectic internal state, there is a abstraction of tears and age despite a youthful appearance suggusting anguish. There is a tree that has taken root in the head of the figure, branches tangling outward almost as if they were a network of neurons. Something in nature has taken over the mind of the figure. This quiet astonishment could easily be insanity. What is the figure looking at? What do they see? What is the root of this effect?

The artist's statement: "I frequently find myself in a state of what I would call 'existential terror.' I have an education in philosophy, and learned from that how to apply logic to everything, including mundane and obvious things. When I did this, at first it was exhilerating. I wrote a lot, and was excited at the prospect of having my work published. Then the endless uncertainty that logic brings (ironically) lead me down the darkest avenues. Reality has an indelible and unrelenting power to shock and bring dread. In a sense, this painting is a self-portrait, but really I dislike when artists say that. For me, is it inspired by personal experience? Yes. But it's more philosophical and universal than that. It's an examination of the state of existential terror itself more so than myself. It's about that state you enter when you realize the world is a dangerous place for your child. Or when you realize that everyone you love will die, eventually. Something takes root, and we lose a little more of our minds to it."

Printed using archival inks on one of several archival fine art papers, each paper type has been selected to preserve the integrity of the work while appealing to personal taste.

Framing Note:

A white border is included around the artwork in each print. This border varies in width depending on the print size, but is always present to help preserve the composition during trimming and to assist with matting and framing. The image that is being printed from is sized to have a 1" border at the maximum size. That border shrinks as the print size shrinks. In addition, a small portion of this border is lost during trimming. Total listed dimensions include this border.
